The Egyptian Ministry of Transport has announced details of the land connection road project linking Egypt, Chad, and Libya, stressing that it will serve as a vital artery for boosting development and interstate trade. The road is also expected to transform Chad into a commercial center connecting the Red Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the ministry explained that the project consists of three main sections:
Section 1: Inside Egypt, spanning 400 kilometers.
Section 2: Inside Libya, covering 390 kilometers.
Section 3: Inside Chad, extending from the Libyan-Chadian border to Ibsha, passing through Um al-Jaras, and measuring 930 kilometers.
The ministry clarified that Section 1 within Egypt is already underway, stretching from East El-Owainat to the Kufra crossing, with work being carried out by Egyptian companies.
For Section 2 within Libya, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Arab Contractors and the Libyan government to begin surveying, environmental studies, and preliminary design work for the road, which will link the Kufra region in southeastern Libya with the Chadian border.
As for Section 3 in Chad, the ministry noted that Arab Contractors has signed a MoU with the Chadian government to start surveying and environmental studies. Contracts have also been signed for the construction of the road from Um al-Jaras to Ibsha.
The ministry emphasised that the project is still in its preparatory phase, with technical and environmental studies being carried out to ensure that the road is built to the highest standards. The initiative is seen as a key step toward promoting economic integration and commercial cooperation among the three nations.
