Two members of the Western Coastal Military Region in Libya were injured on Wednesday following an attack by armed groups in Janzour. According to a statement from the military command, the assault occurred in the Badr Al-Mashat area while the soldiers were carrying out a legal mission to transfer a wanted individual to the relevant authorities.
The Western Coastal Military Region strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a direct challenge to the rule of law and a serious threat to security and stability in the area. In response, military officials issued a three-hour ultimatum for the surrender of those responsible. The statement warned that if the suspects failed to comply, decisive action would be taken to restore security and enforce state authority.
The Al-Mahjoub Brigade, affiliated with the Government of National Unity (GNU) in Misrata, linked the attack to the arrest of Badr Al-Mashat, commander of the so-called “Janzour Knights Battalion.” Al-Mashat was detained upon returning from Tunisia on Wednesday. He is one of four individuals wanted by Libya’s Attorney General following a complaint filed by MP Sarah Al-Sweih.
According to the Al-Mahjoub Brigade, the Security Support and Reinforcement Agency (Janzour Knights), led by Mohamed Al-Barouni, blocked a road in Janzour using sand barriers. They then abducted Al-Mashat while he was being transported from Ras Ajdair to the Attorney General’s Office in Tripoli under the supervision of military forces.
This incident has heightened tensions in the region, raising concerns over escalating conflicts between rival factions operating under different authorities. The Libyan military has vowed to take firm action against any threats to stability.
