Libya’s High Commission for National Reconciliation, led by Al-Siddiq Khalifa Haftar, has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a stable political environment for upcoming elections. Haftar stressed that national reconciliation is essential for ensuring transparent and credible elections where Libyans can freely express their political will.
In an interview with Alhurra, Haftar emphasised that efforts are ongoing to prepare Libyans for elections that will lead to a government representing the people’s true interests. He underscored the importance of nationwide participation in the reconciliation process, calling for inclusive dialogue among all political factions.
“The goal of national reconciliation is to pave the way for genuine and fair elections,” Haftar stated. “We are actively working to create the right conditions for a government that truly represents and protects Libyan interests.”
Haftar highlighted that reconciliation should include all parties without exception, stressing that his commission remains open to discussions with all stakeholders. “Our hands are extended to everyone. We are willing to engage in dialogue and listen to all perspectives,” he added.
Libya has faced prolonged political divisions and conflicts that have hindered previous electoral attempts. Despite various international efforts to mediate between rival factions, elections have been repeatedly delayed.
Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The county has for years been split between rival administrations.
The planned elections for December 2021 were delayed due to disagreements over election laws and the eligibility of certain candidates. This delay has raised concerns about the feasibility of a peaceful political transition.
