On Sunday, head of the Internal Affairs Committee in Libya’s House of Representatives, Suleiman Al-Harari, warned that Libya cannot handle any further influx of migrants and urges the European Union to take full responsibility for its role in the crisis.
In press statements, he stressed that Libya’s institutions are overwhelmed and lack the resources to assist thousands of stranded migrants, calling on European leaders to fulfill their commitments instead of leaving Libya to deal with the crisis alone.
Al-Harari criticised EU migration policies, warning that they have worsened Libya’s humanitarian and security situation.
He pointed out that Libya is already struggling with economic and political instability, and additional waves of migrants will only deepen the crisis.
The Libyan diplomat also warned that uncontrolled migration poses a serious threat to Libya’s national security, saying that if Europe does not intervene, the situation could soon spiral out of control.
Libya has long been a major transit hub for migrants attempting to reach Europe, with thousands making the dangerous Mediterranean crossing every year.
However, years of political turmoil, economic struggles, and weak border enforcement have turned the country into a hotspot for human trafficking and smuggling networks. Many migrants end up trapped in Libya under dire conditions, lacking access to basic services and facing exploitation.
Despite multiple agreements between Libya and the EU to curb migration flows and improve border security, Al-Harari warned that European support has been inadequate. While the EU has provided some funding for Libya’s coast guard and migrant detention centers, critics argue that this assistance is insufficient and does not address the root causes of migration.
Libyan officials have repeatedly stated that they cannot continue to serve as Europe’s border control without significant international support.
