The Libyan Football Federation (LFF) announced on Saturday that it has officially lodged a complaint with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over what it described as “unsportsmanlike and disrespectful” behaviour by Angola’s players. The incident occurred after Angola scored a late equaliser in the World Cup 2026 African Qualifier against Libya last Thursday.

In an official statement posted on its social media platforms, the LFF strongly condemned the actions of Angola’s players following their last-minute goal, which resulted in a 1-1 draw. The federation described the celebration as “unethical and provocative,” claiming it not only disrespected the Libyan team but also offended the spectators at the stadium and millions of viewers watching on television.

The LFF urged CAF to impose disciplinary measures against Angola’s players and their football association, asserting that the celebration was “a blatant violation of sportsmanship and an insult to the principles of fair play upheld by CAF and FIFA.”

Additionally, the Libyan federation called on CAF to enforce its regulations regarding misconduct, emphasising that actions of this nature undermine the spirit of the game. The LFF’s statement stressed the need to protect the integrity of football and ensure respect among competing teams.

The controversial celebration followed a dramatic equaliser by Angola in the third minute of stoppage time, denying Libya a crucial victory. The draw prevented Libya from topping Group D of the African qualifiers. Libya now sits in third place with 8 points, trailing group leaders Cape Verde, who have 10 points, and Cameroon, in second place with 9 points.

Libya’s next match is scheduled against Cameroon in Yaoundé on Tuesday, 25 March, in a fixture that could prove decisive in their World Cup qualification campaign.
