On Wednesday, the United Nations Special Representative for Libya, Hanna Tetteh, held a high-level meeting in Tripoli with Ambassador Tamer El Hefny, Egypt’s Chargé d’Affaires in Libya, to discuss ways to support the work of Libya’s Advisory Committee and reinforce efforts toward holding national elections.
The meeting, which took place on Tuesday, focused on the importance of international and regional backing for the committee, which plays a central role in preparing for presidential and parliamentary elections.
According to a statement released by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Wednesday, the two sides also exchanged views on the broader political and economic context in Libya.
Tetteh stressed that the success of the Advisory Committee depends on cooperation between Libyan stakeholders and the international community, including regional players like Egypt. She noted that creating a conducive environment for elections requires unified political will, security guarantees, and stable governance frameworks.
The discussion highlighted the importance of preserving political stability and ensuring that Libya’s economic resources are managed effectively to support a peaceful transition. Both sides agreed that transparent governance and inclusive participation are key to rebuilding public trust and moving Libya closer to long-term development and national reconciliation.
Egypt has played a significant diplomatic role in Libya’s peace process and remains an influential voice in promoting intra-Libyan dialogue and supporting UN-led efforts. Its engagement in the electoral file is seen as essential to building consensus between Libya’s rival institutions and regions.
The Advisory Committee, established with UNSMIL’s support, is responsible for outlining practical mechanisms for advancing the electoral roadmap, removing legal and political barriers, and facilitating dialogue between the House of Representatives and the High Council of State.
