On Monday, the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs in Libya’s Government of National Unity, Al-Taher Al-Baour, met with the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative to Libya, Hanna Tetteh, to discuss the latest developments in Libya’s political landscape.
The meeting was held at the Foreign Ministry’s headquarters in Tripoli and focused on strengthening collaboration between Libyan institutions and the United Nations.
During the meeting, Al-Baour expressed the Libyan government’s full support for the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) work, emphasizing the importance of continued partnership to advance national consensus and overcome current political challenges.
He also reiterated the government’s commitment to sustainable development and to promoting long-term political stability in the country.
The two officials exchanged views on the progress of the political process and the next steps required to restore unity among Libya’s divided institutions.
The discussion comes at a time when many observers are calling for renewed momentum to move the country closer to national elections, constitutional arrangements, and security reforms.
During the talks, Tetteh briefed the Libyan side on her recent consultations with both domestic and international actors involved in the Libyan file. She highlighted UNSMIL’s efforts to mediate dialogue among stakeholders and support confidence-building measures aimed at facilitating a viable and inclusive political settlement.
The upcoming UN Security Council briefing by UNSMIL was also discussed, with both sides underlining the importance of transparency and international coordination. Tetteh emphasized the UN’s commitment to continue supporting a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned process, aimed at building institutions that are representative, unified, and capable of delivering basic services to citizens.
The meeting underscored the shared objective of restoring political legitimacy and institutional stability through dialogue, consensus, and continued international engagement.
