On Thursday, Egyptian Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, held a telephone conversation with his US counterpart, Mike Pompeo. They discussed recent developments in the region, and the conflict in Libya.

During the talks, the two exchanged views on possible solutions to the numerous crises facing the region. Shoukry reiterated Egypt’s consistent stance on Libya, and the efforts exerted to support the path of a peaceful settlement, through the Cairo Declaration.

The Egyptian initiative was launched on the 6th of June, by President Abdel-Fatah El-Sisi. It involves a ceasefire, a newly elected leadership council, and a long term peace plan for the country.

Libya has been marred in chaos, since the 2011 overthrow of longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi, with rival political and armed groups battling for control of the country.
