Libya Launches International Public Transport to Neighbouring Countries

Libya’s Government of National Unity has announced the launch of a new international public transport project aimed at modernising the country’s road travel system and enhancing regional connectivity. The initiative, jointly unveiled by the Ministries of Interior and Transport, seeks to provide safe, reliable, and comfortable bus journeys to neighbouring countries.

According to a statement by the government, the project will initially operate through two transport companies, Al-Mada and Al-Sahm. The first phase will focus on delivering seamless travel experiences by offering streamlined boarding procedures, uninterrupted transit routes, and fast-track exit processing at land border crossings.

Passengers will benefit from dedicated corridors for border clearance, significantly reducing waiting times and ensuring a smooth journey to their destinations. Similar arrangements will be in place for returning travellers, including reception services from the point of entry into Libya to the final drop-off station.

The project is part of a broader national strategy to improve land transport infrastructure and increase the efficiency of cross-border movement. It also aims to encourage the public to use collective transport options as a more organised and secure alternative to private travel.

A high-level coordination meeting was held to discuss the project’s implementation mechanisms. The meeting included senior officials from both ministries, such as the Director of the General Department for Border Security, the Head of the Border Crossing Management Centre, and the Acting Head of the Land Transport Authority. Representatives from customs, immigration, and security agencies at the Ras Jdir crossing also attended.

A follow-up technical meeting is scheduled for next Monday at Ras Jdir to finalise operational procedures and determine the official launch date.
