Saddam Haftar, Chief of Staff of the Libyan National Army’s (LNA) ground forces, visited frontline positions near Libya’s border with Algeria, according to a statement from the General Command.
The visit involved an inspection of the Special Operations Force “R.I.B 87”, a unit assigned to secure the southern borders. Saddam Haftar assessed the combat readiness, technical capabilities, and equipment of the forces stationed in the area.
The General Command said the inspection was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen border security, counter smuggling activities, and maintain stability across Libya’s frontier regions. Haftar’s tour included a thorough review of the troops’ operational preparations and their ability to perform reconnaissance missions in the remote desert terrain.
The General Command linked the inspection to broader directives issued by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, aimed at reinforcing security and stability along the entirety of Libya’s border strip.
On Saturday, Saddam Haftar also visited the Essin border crossing with Algeria, reaching one of the closest points to the Algerian frontier. His visit, conducted under heavy security, was aimed at reviewing the situation on the ground and ensuring that border operations are running effectively.
Libya’s southern borders have long been a hotspot for smuggling, human trafficking, and militant movements. The latest visits underscore the LNA’s focus on bolstering its presence in these critical areas, as part of a wider campaign to impose greater control over the country’s sprawling and often porous frontiers.
The inspection comes amid growing regional concerns over cross-border security threats and the need for coordinated efforts to protect national sovereignty.
