Libya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Taher Al-Sunni, has reiterated his country’s strong support for Syria and its people during ongoing challenges.
Speaking during Libya’s presidency of the Arab Group, Al-Sunni met with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani in New York. The meeting was attended by ambassadors and representatives of the Arab Group, according to a statement by the Libyan News Agency shared on platform X.
Al-Sunni explained that the session included a briefing by Minister al-Shaibani on the latest developments in Syria. The Syrian minister highlighted the efforts of the new transitional government to tackle political, security, and economic difficulties. He also stressed the leadership’s commitment to national reunification through a comprehensive Syrian dialogue.
“We affirmed Libya’s full support for Syria and its people during these challenging times,” Al-Sunni said. He added that Libya emphasises the importance of cooperation and learning from the experiences both countries have endured in recent years.
The discussions also explored the potential for deeper cooperation between Libya, Syria, and the broader Arab Group. They agreed on the need to back Syria in its recovery process, helping to restore sovereignty, territorial integrity, and stability.
Al-Sunni underlined that the Arab Group has a crucial role to play in supporting Syria’s future. He called for coordinated efforts to assist Syria in overcoming the crises it has faced over the past decade.
Libya’s show of solidarity comes at a time when Syria is striving to regain political and economic stability. Both nations share a recent history of internal conflict, giving their dialogue added significance.
The meeting reflects Libya’s broader diplomatic push to strengthen Arab unity and contribute actively to regional stability.
