On Tuesday, Libya’s General Authority for Hajj and Umrah confirmed that the first group of Libyan pilgrims for the 1446 Hijri Hajj season will depart for Saudi Arabia on May 18, corresponding to the 20th of Dhul-Qi’dah, with flights starting from Mitiga International Airport in Tripoli.
Deputy Chairman of the Authority, Sabri Al-Bouaishi, stated in a media interview that visa processing for pilgrims has officially begun, and that 60% of visas have already been issued, in coordination with the Saudi Ministry of Hajj.
Al-Bouaishi noted that the vaccination campaign for pilgrims is ongoing and has reached over 80% coverage across the country so far. He emphasized the readiness of all designated airports to handle pilgrim traffic, listing Mitiga, Benina, Abrag, Tobruk, and Sebha as the primary departure points for this year’s pilgrimage.
The final outbound flights are scheduled for the 4th of Dhul-Hijjah, ensuring all pilgrims reach Saudi Arabia in time to perform their Hajj rituals.
Regarding the rules surrounding transferring Hajj spots to others, Al-Bouaishi clarified that such transfers will only be permitted in exceptional cases, such as for pregnant women who are unable to travel. In such cases, a direct family member may take their place, provided they have not previously performed Hajj, except in the case of a spouse.
He added that the Authority has reviewed all registered pilgrims and worked to eliminate duplicate entries from those who had already participated in earlier seasons.
Al-Bouaishi also highlighted that special logistics teams and medical committees have been formed both in Libya and Saudi Arabia.
These include units dedicated to travel coordination, health services, and pilgrim support during rituals. Training programs are underway to ensure staff are well-prepared to assist and protect pilgrims throughout the journey.
