The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and its partners have provided life-saving emergency assistance to more than 21,000 individuals across Libya this year, including refugees and members of the host community.
According to a statement by the agency, the aid reached approximately 18,900 refugees and 2,200 Libyans from vulnerable host communities. The assistance, made possible through the support of Austria, Australia, Belgium, Denmark, the European Union, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Qatar Charity, aimed to restore dignity and offer hope to those who have lost everything.
The distributed items included essential household supplies such as mattresses, blankets, kitchen sets, solar lamps, hygiene kits, clothing, and infant care items. These non-food items were described as vital for improving daily life and ensuring basic living conditions for displaced individuals and families in need.
UNHCR emphasised that the distributions are part of a broader humanitarian response in Libya, where thousands remain affected by displacement, conflict, and deteriorating living conditions. Many beneficiaries reside in overcrowded shelters or makeshift camps, facing extreme hardship.
Despite ongoing challenges in the humanitarian access and security landscape, the agency and its partners continue to prioritise assistance to the most vulnerable populations, including women, children, and the elderly.
The support highlights the importance of international solidarity in addressing Libya’s complex humanitarian situation and protecting those displaced by conflict or fleeing persecution.
