Human Rights Watch (HRW) has called for an urgent investigation into serious violations committed during recent armed clashes in the Libyan capital, Tripoli. In a report dated 20 May 2025, the organisation documented the deaths of several civilians and widespread damage to homes and property as a result of intense fighting between rival armed groups.
The report accused both armed factions and semi-official forces of failing to protect civilians. The violence reportedly erupted after the mysterious killing of a militia commander, sparking heavy clashes in densely populated residential areas.
HRW further confirmed that live ammunition was used to disperse anti-government protesters, leading to casualties among demonstrators, including deaths and injuries.
The organisation urged Libyan judicial authorities to immediately launch an investigation into all violations and abuses. It also called for the establishment of safe corridors to allow civilians to flee combat zones and for humanitarian aid to be delivered without obstruction.
The report highlighted the urgent need for all parties to respect international humanitarian law, especially with regard to the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure. HRW also demanded clarity on the fate of detainees and called for their humane treatment in accordance with international legal standards.
The renewed clashes in Tripoli have raised alarm among rights organisations and the international community, amid ongoing instability and the lack of unified security forces in Libya.
