Libya’s Ministry of Interior and the European Union have reiterated their joint commitment to tackling irregular migration through a strategic blend of security coordination and humanitarian cooperation.

In a meeting held Thursday at the Ministry’s headquarters in Tripoli, Libya’s Acting Minister of Interior, Emad Al-Tarabulsi, met with the EU Ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, to discuss the latest security developments and explore avenues for enhanced collaboration in migration management.

Speaking at the meeting, Al-Tarabulsi reaffirmed Libya’s commitment to safeguarding the dignity and rights of migrants during their stay in the country. He stressed the importance of bolstering coordination with the EU to streamline voluntary return processes in a humane and orderly manner.

The two sides reviewed the Voluntary Return Program for undocumented migrants, positioning it as a humanitarian pathway to address the complexities of irregular migration. Discussions also focused on EU support for capacity-building initiatives, including training and professional development programs for Libyan security personnel—aimed at elevating performance in line with international human rights and professional standards.

Both parties emphasized the need for ongoing consultation and practical cooperation, underscoring that a sustainable partnership is crucial to supporting Libya’s efforts to stabilize its security landscape and contribute to regional stability.

The meeting concluded with a joint commitment to implement action-oriented programs that reflect the shared strategic vision between Libya and the EU in the realm of migration governance.
