A Russian investigation committee has revealed the findings of a major probe into the attack on the LNG tanker Arctic Metagas, in an incident that has raised serious concerns over maritime security in the Mediterranean near Libya.

According to the committee, the vessel was targeted in a coordinated assault on March 3 involving two drones and three explosive-laden boats. The attack occurred as the tanker was transporting a large shipment of liquefied natural gas from Murmansk to China.

Explosion and Drift Towards Libyan Coast

The tanker sustained severe damage near Malta, triggering a powerful onboard gas explosion that turned the vessel into a blazing structure at sea. Following the blast, the ship lost control and began drifting southwards in the Mediterranean, moving closer to Libyan waters.

The incident has sparked alarm over the safety of critical energy routes that pass through the region, particularly given Libya’s proximity to major shipping lanes.

Crew Rescued as Investigation Continues

The Russian committee confirmed that all 30 Russian crew members onboard were successfully rescued. Injured personnel were transferred to Russia for treatment, while investigators collected testimonies from the crew and the cargo owners as part of the ongoing inquiry.

Officials stressed that investigations are still underway to determine those responsible for the attack, which has intensified fears over threats to global energy security and the safety of maritime supply chains.

The incident highlights growing risks facing international shipping in the Mediterranean, as authorities monitor developments closely amid rising geopolitical tensions.
