Libyan lawmakers and officials from the Ministry of State for Migration have discussed ways to improve mechanisms for dealing with illegal migration and strengthen coordination among relevant institutions to address the challenges posed by the issue.

The discussions took place during a meeting at the House of Representatives headquarters in Benghazi, where participants reviewed approaches aimed at improving Libya’s management of migration flows while enhancing cooperation between state bodies.

According to officials attending the meeting, both sides examined the adoption of a balanced approach that takes into account human rights principles and remains consistent with Libyan laws and legislation.

Participants stressed the importance of safeguarding Libya’s national interests, identity and cultural heritage while developing practical solutions to address the impact of migration inside the country.

The meeting also highlighted the need to expand cooperation with international organisations and relevant partners involved in migration management and humanitarian assistance.

As part of the outcomes of the discussions, participants agreed to organise a specialised forum dedicated to examining the security, humanitarian and social dimensions of migration in Libya.

A technical committee will also be established to oversee preparations for the event and coordinate its activities, with the aim of producing recommendations that could contribute to improving the country’s migration management framework.

The meeting was attended by Youssef Al-Fakhri, Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Youth, Labour and Social Affairs, and Ibrahim Abdel Hamid, adviser on migration affairs and representative of the Minister of State for Migration.

Representatives from the parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee, the Committee for Displaced Persons and Migrants, and the Legislative and Constitutional Committee also participated in the discussions.
