Libyan House of Representatives member Abdel-Monein Al-Arfi has warned that delaying the appointment of a new head of Libya’s High National Elections Commission could obstruct political agreements and prolong the country’s political crisis.
In an interview with Al-Masar TV, Al-Arfi said the House of Representatives was giving serious attention to reaching an agreement on the commission’s leadership and the laws governing Libya’s electoral process.
He described both issues as essential steps towards holding national elections and ending the prolonged political deadlock.
Al-Arfi said the decision to postpone the appointment and consider a new selection mechanism indicated that some parties were deliberately attempting to undermine the agreements reached by the 4+4 Committee.
He accused those parties of seeking to extend the political crisis and prevent progress towards presidential and parliamentary elections.
The Libyan MP also warned against recent political and military movements, particularly in southern Libya, saying that attempts to create disorder or weaken security would benefit groups seeking to preserve the country’s instability and institutional divisions.
Libya has faced years of political division and repeated delays to national elections. Disputes over electoral laws, executive authority and the leadership of state institutions continue to prevent rival political bodies from reaching a comprehensive settlement.
Al-Arfi called for progress on the election commission’s leadership and electoral framework to prevent further delays and allow Libyans to choose their representatives through elections.
