Libyan Prime Minister of the Government-designate, Osama Hammad, reaffirmed his government’s full commitment to supporting the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) while rejecting what he described as attempts to politicize the electoral process.

In an official statement, Hammad stressed that the elections are ongoing, with suspensions occurring only in limited districts due to judicial rulings. He underlined his administration’s determination to implement these rulings in full compliance with the law.

Full Support for the Electoral Commission

Hammad reiterated that his government provides all necessary financial, logistical, and security resources to the HNEC in order to ensure smooth municipal elections. He emphasized efforts to counter parallel bodies seeking to create alternative institutions that could undermine the electoral process.

He noted that protective measures were taken to safeguard the elections, prevent chaos, and defend the interests of the Libyan people away from narrow political rivalries.

Judicial Oversight and Legal Challenges

The Prime Minister pointed out that rulings by the Administrative Court in Al-Bayda supported appeals against certain HNEC decisions, declaring some procedures invalid. Similarly, the Administrative Judiciary in Tripoli attributed delays in some electoral districts to security concerns and the unavailability of ballot boxes.

Hammad warned against exploiting Libya’s judiciary for political gain, describing the integrity of the courts as a “red line” that cannot be crossed.

Elections as the People’s Right

He firmly rejected any attempt to turn the elections into “a political theater or a tool for international disputes,” affirming that the electoral process is the right of the Libyan people to freely express their will.

Hammad called on the HNEC Board to uphold its legal duties and fulfill its national role independently of political quarrels. He also reaffirmed his government’s pledge before the United Nations and the international community to implement genuine elections that reflect the people’s will under the supervision of one unified government across Libyan territory.
