A rare natural phenomenon has emerged in the heart of the Libyan desert, where a new lake formed following a week of heavy rainfall that flooded parts of the southeast region, one of the driest areas in the country.

Eyewitnesses reported that the lake appeared in a low-lying area after successive thunderstorms brought unusually high levels of precipitation. The sudden body of water has drawn attention in a landscape typically known for its arid climate and scarce rainfall.

According to the Libyan Meteorological Center, thunderclouds continue to affect southeastern regions, with forecasts of moderate to heavy rain in the coming days. Authorities have urged residents in lowland areas to remain cautious of potential flash floods.

Environmental experts note that such events are extremely rare in Libya’s desert and may provide valuable insights into the impact of climate change and shifting weather patterns in arid zones. The phenomenon also highlights the growing influence of tropical storms and unusual rain systems, which have increasingly reached deep into the Sahara.
