In a long-awaited moment for Libyan football, Benghazi International Stadium welcomed back international fixtures after a 22-year hiatus, hosting Libya’s national football team against Eswatini in the African qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Celebratory Atmosphere and Strong Organization

The match was accompanied by a festive atmosphere and meticulous organization. The stadium had undergone extensive renovation and upgrades in recent months, emerging in a new look worthy of its historic status and capable of accommodating the passionate crowds eager to support the national team.

A Stadium with a Rich Sporting Legacy

Benghazi International Stadium—formerly known as the March 28 Stadium in commemoration of the British withdrawal from Libya—has a distinguished sporting history. Since its inauguration on October 12, 1969, with a continental clash between Libya’s Al-Tahaddi and Egypt’s Ismaily in the African Club Championship, the stadium has stood as a symbol of Libyan football pride.

In July 1970, it hosted its first international tournament, the Evacuation Cup, where the Libyan national team played its first official international match against Algeria.

Return After Two Decades

Now, more than two decades after its last international event, the stadium has regained its glory, offering hope to Libyan fans that the clash with Eswatini will mark a new beginning for the national team’s journey toward the ultimate dream: qualifying for the FIFA World Cup.
