Egypt and the European Union have reaffirmed their joint commitment to supporting a comprehensive political solution in Libya, emphasizing the urgent need to end foreign interference and withdraw all foreign forces, mercenaries, and fighters from the country.
In a joint statement issued following the first Egypt–EU Summit held on Wednesday, both sides expressed full support for the United Nations’ efforts and the roadmap put forward by the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to restore peace, stability, and sovereignty across the country.
The statement underscored that any future political process in Libya must be led and owned by Libyans themselves, with the goal of unifying state institutions and holding presidential and parliamentary elections within an agreed timeframe. Both parties also stressed the importance of rebuilding unified military and security institutions capable of protecting Libya’s borders and maintaining national stability.
Egypt and the EU agreed that the presence of foreign forces and mercenaries continues to threaten Libya’s sovereignty and regional security. They called for the complete and verifiable withdrawal of all foreign fighters in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions, describing this step as essential to creating the conditions for a lasting peace.
The joint statement highlighted that achieving a stable, united, and sovereign Libya is crucial for the broader security of the Mediterranean region, noting that continued instability poses challenges to migration management, energy security, and regional cooperation.
Egypt reiterated its “firm and consistent stance” in favor of a sustainable settlement in Libya, viewing stability in its western neighbor as a cornerstone of regional peace. Cairo reaffirmed its readiness to work with international partners to end political division, support national reconciliation, and help create the right conditions for free, fair, and inclusive elections that reflect the will of the Libyan people.
