UN Calls for Urgent Steps to End Libya’s Judiciary Dispute

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya has called for urgent action to resolve Libya’s ongoing judicial crisis, warning of its impact on the unity of the country’s judicial institutions.

In a recent statement, the UN mission said it is closely monitoring developments related to the dispute and its implications for the integrity and cohesion of Libya’s judicial system, amid local efforts to address the situation.

The mission confirmed that current mediation efforts are being led by a Libyan committee composed of prominent judicial, legal, and parliamentary figures, stressing that the initiative represents a fully national and independent process.

It added that the committee’s proposals and outcomes were developed through its own independent work, following extensive consultations with relevant judicial and legal stakeholders, without direct involvement from the UN mission in the discussions or meetings.

According to the statement, the UN’s role remains limited to providing technical support when requested, without participating in the committee’s sessions or engagements with Libyan parties.

The mission noted that three proposals presented by the committee in March represent the minimum necessary steps to safeguard the independence, integrity, and unity of the judiciary.

It said the initiatives respond to the broader public interest and are essential to advancing Libya’s transitional phase toward greater stability.

The UN mission urged all relevant authorities to engage constructively and without delay with the proposals, calling for a responsible and good-faith approach to prevent further divisions within the judiciary and restore its unity in support of justice and the rule of law.
