Libya Marks 5th Anniversary of Ceasefire with Peace Initiative

In a powerful show of unity and reconciliation, the city of Derna hosted the launch of the “Libya for Peace” initiative, marking a nationwide movement that took place simultaneously in more than sixteen cities across the country. The initiative symbolised Libyans’ genuine will to strengthen national cohesion and promote lasting peace.

The event was held under the patronage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Parliament-designate government, with wide participation from official and civil institutions. It also highlighted the key role of the 5+5 Joint Military Commission on the fifth anniversary of the ceasefire agreement signed on 23 October. The initiative received support from the General Command of the Libyan Arab Armed Forces and the United Nations as part of ongoing efforts to consolidate the ceasefire and foster a stable security framework across Libya.

Derna, dubbed the “City of Peace,” delivered a unifying national message — that Libya can heal and stand together once more. The spirit of solidarity that emerged during the aftermath of Storm Daniel remains a powerful symbol of national unity linking the country’s east, west, and south.

Participants emphasised that the initiative was not merely a ceremonial event but a renewed pledge that reason will prevail over conflict and that peace remains the path of the brave. During the celebration, participants proposed designating 11 September as Libya’s National Peace Day, in remembrance of the Derna floods that united Libyans during a moment of profound tragedy and shared humanity.

The event was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Derna’s municipal council, tribal elders, the National Women’s Council, civil society organisations, security officials, media representatives, and large groups of citizens and youth. Together, they reaffirmed their commitment to building a peaceful, secure, and unified Libya.
