Al-Kufra Municipality has reaffirmed its ability to manage the growing influx of refugees despite persistent challenges and limited resources. The municipality’s spokesperson, Abdullah Suleiman, said the local administration continues to handle the refugee file with “professionalism and efficiency”, stressing that the city has maintained stability throughout the past eighteen months.

Speaking to Libya Al-Hadath, Suleiman highlighted the strategic importance of establishing a Sudanese consulate in Al-Kufra. He noted that the city serves as the main gateway between Libya and Sudan, making it a critical point for managing the steady flow of refugees arriving from across the border. He argued that the presence of an official Sudanese diplomatic mission would enhance coordination and ease the documentation process for those fleeing conflict.

Suleiman said that Al-Kufra Municipality, working in cooperation with the General Command, has successfully managed the refugee situation despite significant logistical obstacles. He pointed out that the city is located far from major urban centres, and its authorities operate with limited financial and technical resources. Nevertheless, he said, the municipality has sustained its responsibilities without disruption.

He also underlined the joint efforts between municipal authorities, security institutions, and healthcare facilities. These coordinated operations, he said, have ensured the preservation of public health and social stability during periods of intense refugee movement. According to Suleiman, the city has managed to absorb the pressures of migration without any collapse in essential services.

Local authorities say they remain committed to maintaining operational readiness as refugee arrivals continue. They emphasise the need for enhanced international support, improved border management tools, and stronger cooperation with neighbouring countries to ensure long-term stability.

Al-Kufra officials maintain that the city’s experience in managing refugee flows demonstrates its resilience and organisational capacity, even in the face of persistent regional instability.
