The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Libyan House of Representatives, Yousef Al-Agouri, met with Greece’s newly appointed Consul in Benghazi, Athanasios Anastasopoulos, to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation and supporting stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Al-Agouri welcomed the new Consul and highlighted the longstanding historic ties between Libya and Greece. He reaffirmed Libya’s commitment to expanding cooperation across political, economic, and technical fields, especially at a time when regional coordination is increasingly needed.
During the meeting, both sides reviewed several shared issues. Al-Agouri underscored the importance of Greece’s diplomatic role and stressed the need to continue joint efforts to address files of mutual interest. He emphasized that reinforcing peace and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean remains a priority for both countries.
The discussions also touched on the challenges posed by irregular migration. Al-Aqouri called for cooperative approaches that protect the interests of countries in the region and prevent additional burdens from falling disproportionately on individual states.
He expressed appreciation for Greece’s support in the aftermath of Storm Daniel, which struck eastern Libya in 2023. Al-Aqouri noted Libya’s interest in deepening cooperation in trade, as well as in wildfire prevention and response—an area where Greece has significant technical experience.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Al-Aqouri reiterated the importance of maintaining ongoing coordination between Libya and Greece, saying that enhanced partnership would serve the interests of both peoples and contribute to greater stability and development in the region.
