Egypt’s national carrier, EgyptAir, has announced the launch of a new direct and regular flight route linking Alexandria with Benghazi in eastern Libya, in a move aimed at strengthening regional connectivity and supporting commercial and social ties between the two neighbouring countries.
The airline confirmed that the service will commence on 3 December, operating twice a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The route will be served by the Boeing B737-800 aircraft, one of the company’s main medium-haul jets. According to EgyptAir, the decision forms part of a broader expansion strategy to extend its network across Arab and African markets through direct point-to-point flights.
In its statement, the airline said the new route reflects its commitment to responding to the needs of travellers and the business community, facilitating movement between the two Mediterranean cities, and contributing to development and cooperation. EgyptAir emphasised that enhancing connectivity with Libya remains a strategic priority, given the historic ties and strong economic potential between both nations.
The airline added that the new service complements ongoing efforts to maintain high safety and operational standards while upgrading its fleet. EgyptAir continues to expand its destinations internationally, operating flights to 82 cities from Cairo, four international routes from Alexandria, and six domestic destinations.
During fiscal year 2024/2025, EgyptAir launched several new routes including Zurich, Prague, Mogadishu, Djibouti, Abidjan, Taif, Tabuk and Misrata. The carrier plans further expansion in 2025/2026, with future services expected to reach Venice, Los Angeles and Chicago, increasing its network to 85 international destinations from Cairo and five from Alexandria.
EgyptAir anticipates operating more than 42,000 flights during the current fiscal year, transporting nearly 12 million passengers and offering 16.2 million seats across its network.
