Libyan authorities have issued a maritime warning after a Russian gas tanker drifted out of control in the Mediterranean Sea following a failed towing operation caused by severe weather conditions.
The tanker, identified as the Arctic Metagas, broke free during an attempt to tow it to safety, according to the Libyan Coast Guard. The operation was halted early on Thursday due to a deep low-pressure system that brought strong winds and high waves.
The Search and Rescue Coordination Centre said wind speeds reached between 40 and 50 knots, while wave heights rose to around five metres. These conditions made it impossible for the towing vessel to maintain control or reconnect with the tanker.
Officials confirmed that the vessel is now drifting freely and remains in an unstable position. Its last recorded location was approximately 33.50 degrees north latitude and 16.43 degrees east longitude.
In a statement, authorities urged all ships and maritime units to maintain a safe distance of at least 10 nautical miles from the drifting tanker. They also called on crews to remain vigilant and report any developments, including signs of leakage or emissions.
The incident has raised concerns over maritime safety and potential environmental risks, particularly if the tanker sustains damage or releases hazardous materials into the sea.
Libya’s coastline is a critical corridor for shipping and energy transport, making such incidents a serious concern for both national and regional authorities.
Experts expect extreme weather conditions in the Mediterranean can complicate rescue and towing operations, especially for large vessels carrying sensitive cargo.
Authorities said monitoring efforts will continue until weather conditions improve and a new recovery attempt can be safely carried out.
