A Criminal Investigation Department officer was killed in an armed attack while returning to his home in the city of Janzour, west of Tripoli, according to local sources.
The victim was identified as Lieutenant Colonel Hamza Al-Ruhaibi, a member of the Criminal Investigation Department’s Janzour branch. He was reportedly driving home from Al-Rahibat when unidentified gunmen opened fire on his vehicle.
Witnesses said Al-Ruhaibi was accompanied by his wife at the time of the attack. He sustained fatal gunshot wounds and died at the scene, while his wife survived. Authorities have not released further information regarding her condition.
According to eyewitnesses, the attackers fled immediately after carrying out the shooting. No arrests have been announced, and the identities of those responsible remain unknown.
Officials have also not disclosed a possible motive behind the attack, while the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
Al-Ruhaibi served with the Criminal Investigation Department in Janzour, one of the security agencies responsible for investigating criminal cases and supporting law enforcement operations in western Libya.
The killing has renewed concerns over the security situation in the Tripoli area, where armed attacks targeting security personnel and public officials have occurred periodically in recent years.
As of now, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and no official statement has been issued detailing the progress of the investigation.
