On Thursday, the Secretary-General of the Arab League (AL), Ahmed Aboul Gheit, held a meeting with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell at the League’s headquarters in Cairo.

During the talks, Aboul Gheit and Borrell exchanged views on the current developments in the Arab world, especially in Libya. In addition to enhancing cooperation between the AL and EU at various levels.

An official source stated that Aboul Gheit stressed the need to maintain the current ceasefire between the Government of National Accord (GNA) and the Libyan National Army (LNA), as well as to encourage the Libyan parties to engage in political dialogue under the auspices of the UN.

The Secretary-General also confirmed that the warring parties should commit to the ceasefire, resume oil production, and move towards an integrated settlement of the crisis.

In turn, Borrell briefed Aboul Gheit on the outcomes of his recent visit to Libya. He held meetings with Libyan leaders in Tripoli and Al-Qubba, to try and put an end to the crisis. Including implementing the security, political, and economic tracks agreed upon during the Berlin Conference.

The source stated that Aboul Gheit and Borrell also stressed the need to end all military intervention, and unify international efforts. As well as strengthen cooperation and complementary efforts, between the AL and the EU, to reach a peaceful settlement to the conflict.
