Deadly Crash Claims Libyan Family Traveling from Benghazi

A tragic road accident claimed the lives of four members of the same family who were traveling from Benghazi, after their vehicle overturned on the highway linking Ajdabiya and Jalu, local sources said.

The crash occurred near Gate 60, a known checkpoint along the Ajdabiya–Jalu road. According to initial reports, the family’s car suddenly overturned while in motion, killing all occupants at the scene. Emergency responders arrived shortly after the incident, but none of the passengers survived.

The Ajdabiya–Jalu road is considered one of eastern Libya’s key transport corridors, handling heavy daily traffic, particularly for travelers moving between coastal cities and inland areas. However, the route has long been associated with frequent and often fatal accidents, largely attributed to excessive speed, poor road conditions, and limited safety infrastructure.

Local residents and road users have repeatedly raised concerns about traffic safety along this stretch, calling for stricter speed controls, improved road maintenance, clearer signage, and stronger enforcement of traffic regulations. The latest incident has renewed calls for urgent action to reduce the rising toll of road fatalities in the region.

Road accidents remain one of the leading causes of death in Libya, with families and communities frequently affected by crashes on major highways. Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on whether an investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding this latest tragedy.
