Libya’s scientific committee overseeing the file of victims from Storm Daniel has confirmed the identities of 24 previously unidentified missing persons from the disaster that struck the city of Derna in September 2023.
The announcement was made during the committee’s regular meeting, chaired by Kamal Al-Siouy, head of the General Authority for Research and Identification of Missing Persons, as part of ongoing efforts to identify storm victims and support affected families.
The committee said the identifications were made based on DNA test results received from the laboratories department, which showed clear matches with data previously recorded in the official database. Among those identified is one Syrian national, highlighting the diverse backgrounds of the victims affected by the catastrophe.
The newly confirmed names have been referred to the Public Prosecutor’s Office to complete the required legal procedures. Authorities confirmed that work continues to identify the remaining unknown cases, as forensic teams press ahead with documentation and verification.
The development marks further progress in efforts to clarify the fate of those missing after the storm, which killed hundreds and caused widespread destruction to Derna’s infrastructure, homes, and essential services.
