Severe Weather Disrupts Flights at Tripoli’s Mitiga Airport

Several incoming flights from Jeddah and Cairo bound for Mitiga International Airport have been diverted to Misrata International Airport after severe weather conditions caused low visibility and strong winds that temporarily shut down operations at Mitiga.

Officials at Mitiga reported that deteriorating weather — including dust-laden winds and significantly reduced horizontal visibility — made safe landings impossible, forcing air traffic controllers to reroute incoming flights to alternate airports to ensure passenger safety.

According to aviation trackers and local announcements, a flight from Jeddah to Mitiga was redirected to Misrata International Airport, and similar disruptions affected other scheduled flights bound for Tripoli.

Travel analysts noted that such weather-related diversions are not uncommon in Libya during periods of dust storms and strong winds, particularly affecting eastern and central airspace corridors. Airlines typically activate contingency plans and coordinate with alternate airports to reduce delays and protect passengers.

Misrata Airport authorities confirmed that the diverted flights landed safely and that ground services were mobilized to manage arrivals and assist passengers with onward travel arrangements. Mitiga resumed limited operations later in the afternoon as weather conditions improved.

The Libyan Civil Aviation Authority has advised travelers to check with their airlines for updated schedules and possible subsequent changes, emphasizing that safety remains the top priority amid fluctuating weather patterns.
