The most significant discovery was recorded offshore western Libya, where drilling operations identified a major gas reserve approximately 95 kilometers from the coast. Initial tests showed production rates of up to 24 million cubic feet per day, underscoring the potential of Libya’s offshore assets.

Onshore, a new oil discovery in the Murzuq Basin, located around 800 kilometers south of Tripoli, is producing an estimated 763 barrels per day. Meanwhile, a third discovery in the Ghadames Basin near the Algerian border revealed combined gas and condensate flows of approximately 13 million cubic feet per day and 327 barrels daily.

These results demonstrate continued success across multiple geological formations, with both established and underexplored regions delivering commercially viable volumes.

Boosting Production and Attracting Investment

The new discoveries form part of Libya’s broader strategy to rapidly increase hydrocarbon production following years of disruption. Officials aim to leverage existing infrastructure and long-standing exploration agreements to accelerate output growth in the short term.

Libya’s energy sector remains the backbone of its economy, accounting for more than 95% of national revenues. This makes expanding oil and gas production a central pillar of economic recovery and fiscal stability.

International Partnerships Drive Energy Revival

The involvement of international partners reflects growing confidence in Libya’s energy sector. Collaboration with companies such as Eni, Repsol, and Sonatrach is helping to revive exploration activity and unlock new reserves across key basins.

Offshore gas discoveries are particularly important, as Libya seeks to strengthen domestic supply while maintaining its role as a key energy supplier to European markets. At the same time, onshore developments in the Murzuq and Ghadames basins reaffirm the long-term potential of Libya’s established oil regions.

Outlook for Libya’s Energy Sector

The latest discoveries signal a positive outlook for Libya’s upstream sector, with increased exploration activity expected to continue in the coming years. Analysts say that sustained investment, improved security conditions, and regulatory clarity will be critical to maintaining this momentum.

As Libya doubles down on fast-track oil growth, the combination of new discoveries and international partnerships is likely to play a key role in driving production gains and supporting economic recovery.
