Libyan and Tunisian officials have called for stronger economic integration and joint investment during a major trade exhibition held in Misrata, highlighting Libya’s growing focus on reconstruction and regional partnerships.

The statements were made during the sixth African Building and Construction Expo, organised in partnership between the Misrata Chamber of Commerce and its counterpart in Sfax. The event brought together international firms, investors and Libyan authorities to explore opportunities in infrastructure and development projects.

Habib Hammami, head of the Sfax Chamber of Commerce, urged businesses to take advantage of free zone incentives to boost cross-border investment and expand cooperation across African markets. He said Tunisia’s position within regional economic blocs enhances prospects for deeper integration with Libya.

Fathi Al-Amin, chairman of the Misrata Chamber of Commerce, said the exhibition serves as a platform linking global companies with Libyan institutions. He stressed that the construction sector remains central to economic cooperation between Libya and its regional partners.

Libyan Housing and Reconstruction Minister Issam Abu Zariba said the government is prioritising smart city projects in partnership with the private sector as part of a broader reconstruction strategy. He noted that rebuilding infrastructure remains a key pillar of Libya’s economic recovery.

Industry and Minerals Minister Ahmed Abu Hisa added that Libya is pursuing a long-term strategy to localise industry and transfer technology through international partnerships. He said Libya should be viewed as a promising investment destination rather than solely a reconstruction zone.

The expo reflects Libya’s efforts to attract foreign investment and rebuild its economy after years of conflict. Authorities are increasingly promoting public-private partnerships to accelerate development.

However, challenges remain, including regulatory hurdles and political divisions that continue to affect the business climate. Analysts say sustained cooperation and policy reforms will be essential to unlocking Libya’s full economic potential.
