China has officially launched a new direct maritime shipping route to eastern Libya, with Ma Xue Liang attending the inauguration ceremony of COSCO Shipping’s new line connecting Asian ports to Benghazi.

The ceremony marked the arrival of the first cargo vessel on the route, attended by Belgasem Hafter and local officials, including the Mayor of Benghazi.

Benghazi Re-Emerges as Strategic Trade Gateway

In his remarks, Belgasem Hafter described the launch as a strategic milestone rather than just a logistics development. He said the new shipping line reflects Benghazi’s return to its role as a vital economic hub and a key gateway for trade, supply chains, and reconstruction efforts in Libya.

The new route establishes a direct maritime link between East Asian ports and Benghazi, eliminating the need for intermediary stops and reducing transit times for goods entering the Libyan market.

Julyana Free Zone Positioned as Regional Logistics Hub

The initiative is expected to strengthen the role of the Julyana Free Port as a major transit and re-export hub. Officials say the port will serve as a key distribution point for goods heading to Mediterranean markets and African countries, enhancing its position as a regional logistics centre.

Plans to Expand Shipping Capacity

Mustafa Al-Salak, the local agent for COSCO and Director of the Benghazi branch of Seas of the World Company, said the service will initially operate with two voyages per month, with plans to expand to four monthly trips or one voyage per week.

He added that the direct shipping line will reduce both transportation time and costs, while boosting the competitiveness of Libya’s import sector and supporting local trade.

The new route is also expected to contribute to stabilising prices of imported goods and opening new opportunities for investment and commercial transport in Libya.
