A recent US report highlighted Libya’s growing role in regional security cooperation through its participation in the multinational military exercise “Flintlock 26,” describing the country’s involvement as part of wider international efforts to address the expansion of terrorism and armed threats across Africa.
The report, published by DVIDS Hub, focused on an event organized by the United States Special Operations Command Africa in Tampa, Florida, during its operational activities held on May 19.
The discussions centered on the outcomes and strategic importance of the “Flintlock 26” exercises, which included operations hosted in the Libyan city of Sirte under the coordination of the United States Africa Command, known as AFRICOM.
The multinational drills brought together military forces and security partners from several countries with the goal of improving operational coordination, counterterrorism cooperation, and regional military readiness. Libya’s participation drew particular attention because forces from different Libyan military structures took part in the exercises together, reflecting ongoing efforts to improve coordination and communication between rival security institutions.
According to the report, members of Libya’s Joint Military Coordination Committee, commonly referred to as the “3+3 Committee,” participated in panel discussions highlighting the importance of interoperability and military cooperation across the African continent. Officials emphasized that professional cooperation during the exercises helped strengthen confidence between Libyan military actors and international partners.
Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah Al-Masoudi stated that Libya recognized the importance of participating in the planning and hosting of part of the Flintlock exercises from the beginning. He described the level of trust developed through the process as a major achievement that demonstrates Libya’s ability to contribute to regional security efforts and international military partnerships.
Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Dakhil also stressed that one of the most important aspects of Flintlock is the long-term partnership model built on transparency, trust, and mutual respect. He explained that the exercises aim to help develop professional and capable forces that can operate effectively and independently while maintaining strong coordination with regional partners.
The report concluded that multinational military exercises such as Flintlock encourage the exchange of expertise, strengthen sustainable security cooperation across Africa, and reinforce Libya’s position within broader regional security frameworks.
