UN Envoy Urges Libya to End Division

Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya Hanna Serwaa Tetteh congratulated the Libyan people on Eid Al-Adha, while urging the country’s leaders to end political division, address human rights violations, and respond to worsening living conditions.

In a message published by UNSMIL, Tetteh said Libya’s difficult economic situation and growing cost-of-living pressures are weighing heavily on citizens and overshadowing the joy and solidarity usually associated with Eid.

She said the upcoming outcomes of the structured dialogue are intended to help shape a positive vision for peace, prosperity, and development in Libya. Tetteh expressed hope that all parties would deal with the results in good faith.

The UN envoy called for Eid Al-Adha to become a starting point for peace, reconciliation, and renewed hope across the country. She noted that Libyans continue to face hardship amid political deadlock and institutional division.

Tetteh also stressed the need to address Libya’s human rights file. Although some progress has been made on arrests and arbitrary detention, she said wider steps are still needed to protect innocent people, deliver justice, and end the suffering of those held without legal grounds.

She voiced concern over the unresolved issue of missing persons, saying the pain, uncertainty, and long wait endured by their families must come to an end.

Tetteh called for the immediate and unconditional release of all forcibly disappeared persons and those arbitrarily detained, describing this as an essential step toward national reconciliation, dignity, and trust among Libyans.

She said the sacrifices made by the Libyan people over recent years must be met with responsible leadership that places citizens’ interests first.

The UN envoy urged the authorities to act quickly to meet public aspirations and called on political leaders to move beyond the current stalemate.

She also urged them to engage seriously in a process that guarantees Libyans the right to choose their leadership and to form a government deriving its legitimacy from the will of the people.

Tetteh further underlined the importance of supporting recently elected municipalities and implementing programmes that respond to residents’ immediate needs. She said such steps would help improve public services and strengthen stability across Libya.
