Libyan security authorities have recovered the bodies of two irregular migrants from the sea off the coast of Qarabulli, east of Tripoli, according to the Security Directorate of Tajoura.
The directorate said in a statement on Wednesday that the operation was launched after a phone alert was received from the Qarabulli Coast Security Agency by the local police station. Officers were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they recovered the bodies from the shoreline.
Authorities confirmed that the deceased were two African nationals who drowned while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea toward Europe.
The bodies were transferred to Qarabulli General Hospital for further procedures, the statement added.
Libya remains a key transit point for migrants attempting to reach Europe via the central Mediterranean route, one of the world’s most dangerous migration corridors. Despite repeated international warnings and ongoing rescue operations, irregular crossings continue from Libyan coastal areas.
Local authorities have intensified patrols and coordination with coast guard units in recent years, but limited resources and continued departure attempts have made maritime incidents frequent along the western Libyan coastline.
The latest incident adds to a series of maritime tragedies off Libya’s shores, highlighting the ongoing risks faced by migrants embarking on unsafe sea journeys organised by smuggling networks operating across North Africa.
