Libya’s General Command has expressed support for a new US initiative aimed at advancing a political settlement in the country, announcing its readiness to participate directly in negotiations that could lead to the unification of state institutions and the organization of national elections.
In an official statement, the General Command described the proposal presented by Massad Boulos, senior adviser to US President Donald Trump, as a distinct and promising initiative that differs from previous international efforts.
It said the proposal reflects a realistic understanding of Libya’s political complexities and demonstrates a serious commitment to helping the country overcome its prolonged crisis.
According to the statement, discussions with US representatives revealed what the General Command described as genuine intentions to contribute to a comprehensive solution. It noted that the initiative focuses on unifying Libya’s executive authority as a key entry point toward resolving broader political divisions and restoring stability.
The General Command welcomed the proposal’s approach of avoiding detailed preconditions, arguing that sensitive political issues should instead be addressed through direct negotiations among Libyan stakeholders. It said this flexibility increases the initiative’s chances of success and makes it worthy of serious consideration.
Emphasizing its commitment to national unity, the General Command announced its full readiness to engage in direct talks aimed at refining the initiative and developing a final framework capable of serving Libya’s interests.
It added that such a process should ultimately produce a clear roadmap leading to presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible.
At the same time, the statement stressed that the success of any political initiative will depend on sustained support from the United States, the international community, and Libyan actors.
The General Command cautioned against repeating the shortcomings of previous political tracks, many of which failed to achieve tangible progress despite extensive international involvement.
The statement also reaffirmed the General Command’s commitment to what it described as Libya’s fundamental national principles, including sovereignty, territorial integrity, security, stability, and the protection of national institutions.
It emphasized that these principles remain non-negotiable and will continue to guide its position on all political initiatives.
Concluding its remarks, the General Command expressed hope that the new initiative could provide fresh momentum toward a comprehensive settlement, helping Libya move beyond years of division and laying the groundwork for a unified, democratic, and stable state.
