On Wednesday, Tunisian President Kais Saied held a meeting with US Defence Secretary Mark Esper, to discuss the region, especially the Libyan crisis.

The two spoke of increasing US-Tunisian cooperation in the fields of economy, security, defence, and counterterrorism, according to a statement released by the Presidency.

Saied noted the solution to the Libyan crisis should be based on an agreement by all parties, away from foreign interference. He reaffirmed Tunisia’s readiness to provide its full support to find a political settlement that preserves the unity, and stability of Libya. This is because Tunisia remains one of the most affected countries, by the situation in Libya. Esper said the United States is also ready to contribute to a peaceful solution, one that would put an end to the crisis, and achieve stability in the region.

Tunisian Defence Minister, Ibrahim Bartaji, signed a roadmap for military cooperation between the two countries for the period 2020-2030. This roadmap aims to increase the readiness of the Tunisian armed forces and develop their capabilities to face security threats and challenges in the region.
