The Italian Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio, stated that destabilising Libya and taking part in the 2011 NATO intervention was one of the biggest mistakes Italy had ever made.

In response to an interrogation in the Italian Senate over the detained Sicilian fishermen in Benghazi, Di Maio stressed that they were safe, and that the priority was to ensure their return home. He called for uniting efforts to free the fishermen.

During the session, a Senator criticized Di Maio’s policies. He asked him to travel to Libya and take care of the fishermen, who were kidnapped 45 days ago. Di Maio replied that, as the FM he was dealing with Libya in this way, due to previous governments intervention.
