The Italian Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio, has said that dialogue with Turkey is better than clashing with it, referring to the current tension between Ankara and the EU countries.

In an interview with the French newspaper Le Monde, Di Maio said that Turkey remains a reliable interlocutor for Europe. “I do not think that the recent tensions with France have worsened our dialogue with Turkey,” he said.

“Despite the many unilateral measures that we have condemned, Turkey remains a strategic partner and ally in NATO, as well as being an indispensable interlocutor on some of our priority files, such as Libya, immigration and energy policies.”

“For this reason, I remain convinced that it is in our common interest to maintain a firm but constructive dialogue with Ankara,” Di Maio noted.

The Italian top diplomat explained that constructive dialogue with Turkey is definitely more beneficial to everyone than confrontation. He noted that the confrontation with Turkey will only lead to instability.
