On Wednesday, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias held a meeting with his Italian counterpart, Luigi Di Maio in Athens. The two discussed the latest regional developments in the eastern Mediterranean, the Libyan crisis, and Turkish provocative activities towards Greece.

During the talks, Dendias made it clear that they would like stronger Italian support on the issue of sanctions against Turkey.

They stressed the need to consolidate the UN’s political track in Libya, to address all aspects of the crisis, help eliminate terrorism, preserve the national resources, rebuild institutions, and limit foreign interference.

“We also discussed the broader issues of the region, the Turkish provocations. I informed him of the resumption of exploratory talks on 25 January, the wider Turkish provocative behaviour in the eastern Mediterranean and issues concerning the region,” Dendias said. The migration issue was also on the agenda.

Italy, along with Germany, Spain, Malta, and Hungary, have been vetoing sanctions against Turkey, despite repeated violations of Greek and Cypriot sovereignty.
