On Friday, the Head of the Defence and National Security Committee of the Libyan House of Representatives (HoR), Talal al-Mayhoub, called on the Speaker and members of the parliament to think carefully before granting confidence to the government of Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba.

In a statement, al-Mayhoub said, that “at a time when our people were looking forward to the speech of the national unity government by announcing the proposed government and hoping to complete the nation’s sovereignty and prestige and improve services, we were surprised by the Prime Minister’s acceptance of the agreements concluded with the Turkish side, and their acceptance of their presence on the land of the country.”

Al-Mayhoub called on parliament to think carefully before granting confidence to the government until determining its position on the agreements concluded with the Turkish side.

At a press conference in Tripoli on Thursday, Dbaiba said that Libya will continue to work on the maritime border agreement with Turkey, adding that he “will study other agreements.”

In November 2019, the Head of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez al-Sarraj, had signed two memoranda of understanding with Turkey regarding maritime powers and security and military cooperation, which provoked reactions from Egypt, Greece and Cyprus regarding the conflict of interests in the Mediterranean region.
