Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio and his American counterpart, Anthony Blinken stressed their support to the Libyan people on the road towards free and fair elections. As well as towards a sustainable political solution within the framework of the United Nations.

In a joint editorial in the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, Di Maio and Blinken emphasized that their commitment within NATO is well established, emphasising that stability ranging from Afghanistan to the Sahel, including the Mediterranean basin is a primary goal of Italian-American cooperation.

Last month, Di Maio said that Italy is looking to reopen its consulate in Benghazi, and an honorary consulate in the southern region. He said that his visit to Libya with his French, and German counterparts was telling evidence of European support for peace in Libya

With regard to bilateral economic cooperation, Di Maio clarified that Rome is revitalizing a series of economic opportunities for Italian companies that left Libya. He stated that they now have the opportunity to contribute to rebuilding the country.
