On Monday, Director of the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr. Badr Al-Din Al-Najjar announced that eighteen municipalities in Libya are ready to receive the COVID-19 vaccines. He pointed out that the national vaccination campaign will begin in the next few days.

Al-Najjar said in press statements that the NCDC received about 253,000 doses of the Russian Sputnik-V and British AstraZeneca vaccines, which was delivered to Libya through the UN-supported Kovacs initiative.

“The Sputnik-V vaccine will be offered to those under the age of 60, while the AstraZeneca vaccine will be provided to the elderly,” he noted.

Al-Najjar said that the vaccination campaign will initially target medical personnel, and aid workers in the healthcare sector. He called on citizens to register in the vaccination system, adding that about 450,000 citizens have already registered to receive the vaccine.

Libyan Prime Minister, Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba confirmed that more than one million doses have been delivered to Libya within the last week.

Libya recorded 169,504 total cases, including 12,454 active cases, and 2,830 deaths.
