A member of the Libyan Parliament, Misbah Douma submitted a proposal to add new items to the agenda of the Berlin II Conference, which is scheduled to be held on 23 June.
Douma’s proposal came in a tweet, where he referred to the statements of German Foreign Minister, Heiko Maas about the upcoming elections, the withdrawal of mercenaries, and the unification of the military establishment at the conference.
He expressed his hope that weapons collection, and comprehensive national reconciliation, would be added to the talks; due to “the issue of the elections being settled on the 24th of December.”
Notably, Maas and United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres invited several states and regional organisations to the Second Berlin Conference on Libya.
The German Foreign Ministry said in a statement that this will be the first time that the Libyan Government of National Unity (GNU) will be represented at such an event. It added that the conference is an expression of the continued international support for the stabilisation of Libya.
The statement claimed that the conference will take stock of progress made since the first Berlin Conference on Libya, held on 19 January 2020. “Moreover, the next steps needed for a sustainable stabilization of the country will be discussed at the conference,” it noted.
