The European Union welcomed the ratification of the Paris Climate Agreement by the Libyan Parliament, confirming that this represents an “important step in Libya’s transition towards clean and sustainable energy.”

The Paris Agreement is the first comprehensive international agreement to protect the climate, by working to contain the rate of global warming. It was reached on 12 December 2015, after negotiations between representatives of 195 countries.

According to the EU statement, the United Kingdom will host another UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) this year, and hoped that local efforts will continue in Libya and the world as a whole to ensure a better future for all.

On Tuesday, the Libyan Parliament voted to approve the ratification of the Paris Agreement on Climate and Protection of the Environment of Life on Earth.
