The United Nations has stated that alleged attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, especially in the recent clashes in the cities of Sabratha and Surman, could constitute war crimes.

In a press conference held by UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, the UN called on the Libyan National Army (LNA) and the Government of National Accord (GNA) to announce a ceasefire immediately, bring an end to all hostilities and reach a political solution to find a way out of the current crisis.

“Acts of revenge will further escalate the conflict and lead to a cycle of revenge that threatens the social fabric in Libya.”

Dujarric claimed that the situation was significantly worrisome and reiterated calls for the warring parties to implement a humanitarian truce to combat the threat of COVID-19.
